November is National Family Caregiver Appreciation Month – a time to recognize the compassion, strength, and resilience of those who provide essential care and support to loved ones living with chronic illness, mental health conditions, or disabilities. These caregivers are often the unsung heroes of our healthcare system. They manage appointments, medications, crises, and emotional care—all while balancing their own lives, jobs, and responsibilities.
For those supporting individuals with serious mental illness, caregiving can be especially complex. They navigate unpredictable systems of care, manage stigma, and advocate tirelessly for dignity and understanding. Their efforts often go unseen, yet they are vital to helping people stay engaged in treatment and, for many, in research participation that drives new breakthroughs in mental health care.
As mental health advocates and clinical research professionals, we see every day how deeply caregivers shape recovery and engagement in care. Their perspectives can guide more person-centered research protocols, more compassionate communication, and stronger community connections. This month, we encourage sites to pause, reflect, and recognize the caregivers who walk beside participants on their research journey.
Ideas for Clinical Research Sites: Honoring Caregivers and Giving Back
- Host a Caregiver Appreciation Day.
Invite caregivers to visit your site for coffee, cocoa, or cookies, offering a simple gesture of thanks. Share resources from local NAMI affiliates, Clubhouses, or caregiver support groups. - Create a “Wall of Gratitude.”
Encourage staff and participants to write notes of thanks to the caregivers in their lives. Display these in the lobby or share excerpts on your site’s social media (with permission). - Offer Caregiver Resource Kits.
Provide small take-home packets with mental health education materials, coping tools, and information on community supports. Include a handwritten note from your team recognizing their role in care. - Share Caregiver Voices.
Invite caregivers (with consent) to share their stories in your site’s newsletter or waiting area. Humanizing their experiences fosters empathy and deeper understanding among staff and participants alike. - Organize a Staff “Acts of Kindness” Challenge.
Encourage team members to perform small acts of kindness for caregivers—writing thank-you cards, offering warm drinks during long visits, or simply taking an extra moment to listen. - Host a “Community Connection” Event.
Partner with advocacy organizations to host a roundtable or open discussion about caregiver needs, mental health challenges, and how research can better serve families. - Recognize Staff Caregivers.
Many site staff also serve as caregivers at home. Acknowledge their dual roles and express appreciation through small tokens, flexible scheduling, or team recognition. - Share Gratitude All Month Long.
Use social media or your site’s internal newsletter to highlight caregivers, participants, and staff who exemplify compassion in action. A simple thank-you can go a long way.
At The STARR Coalition, we believe that community engagement and caregiver recognition go hand in hand. Caregivers help bridge research and real life—supporting individuals through participation, recovery, and hope. By taking time this season to honor them and give back to the communities we serve, we strengthen not only our connections but the heart of mental health research itself.
Together, we can make the season – and the journey – sweeter for all.
