TD is in the room. Are you recognizing it?

Each year, Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Week shines a light on a movement disorder that affects an estimated 800,000 adults in the U.S. – yet approximately 60% remain undiagnosed. For individuals already navigating a serious mental health condition, the uncontrollable movements of TD can add another layer of stigma, self-consciousness, and isolation.

TD appears as mild to severe twitching, shaking, or jerking in the hands, face, feet, or torso. It is associated with long-term use of certain psychiatric medications, including antipsychotics commonly used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. In fact, 1 in 4 people taking medications for these conditions may develop TD.

The good news: TD can be treated.

The challenge: it first has to be recognized.

Why This Matters for Clinical Research Sites

If your site works with patients managing schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other serious mental illnesses, there is a good chance TD is already present in your participant population, whether or not it has been identified.

TD is underdiagnosed, underscreened, and too often dismissed as a side effect patients simply learn to live with. Research sites are uniquely positioned to change that. By educating patients who may not recognize their own symptoms, training staff to screen proactively, and connecting participants with available resources, sites can meaningfully improve quality of life for the people they serve – and strengthen the trust that makes ongoing research participation possible.

Use TD Awareness Week to:

  • Educate patients and caregivers about TD symptoms and available treatments
  • Review your site’s screening practices for movement disorders in participants on long-term psychiatric medications
  • Share resources with your broader community and referral network
